Broadly
speaking there are 4 – types of works in the world that any person could do and
consequently persons can be classified into these 4-types. These work types are
as under: a) labor works b) skill based works c) knowledge based works and d)
talent based work.
Coming
to the first type of work, the labor works – these are the works that doesn’t
require much knowledge or skill. Anyone can do this work without pre-knowledge
or expertise. The people doing these types of works are commonly called as ‘laborers’.
Examples for these works include: weight bearers, sweepers, hotel servers, gate
keepers, and the like. These types of works generally demand no prior experience
or education; consequently these jobs pay very less salary.
Skill
based jobs on the other hand require prior experience in order to accomplish
the work. This also requires some knowledge but, it is of the kind of ‘experimental
knowledge’ and not that is based on ‘teach-learn’ process generally but, it is
of the sort of ‘hands on experience’ and it might also involve teaching too
before the practical session begins. The worker doing these types of jobs would
undergo a lot of ‘hands on training’ before they could take up these kinds of
works. Generally, these types of jobs are much ‘repetitive in nature’, i.e.,
doing the same work again and again or using the same instruments repeatedly. Some
of these types of jobs are very attractive in terms of salary and other remunerations;
these types of jobs include: captain of ships and flights, truck drivers, bank cashiers,
clerks, lab assistants, some kinds of software programmers, hospital nurses,
etc. In this type of jobs, ‘practice’ or ‘practical knowledge’ is more
important than ‘knowledge’ gained by reading or hearing.
Now,
coming to the ‘knowledge based’ jobs, these as the name itself implies, require
a lot of ‘knowledge’ to accomplish. Those doing these jobs are generally called
as ‘knowledge workers’ and these are looked in limelight in the society. These types
of workers have to undergo a great deal of rigorous study before they could
take up these jobs. These jobs often demand degrees and diplomas and even doctoral
degrees as well. Although some of these jobs might require some sort of ‘practical
experience’ - these jobs are mainly dependent on the ‘knowledge’ in the field
of work concerned. These jobs include: doctors, engineers, architects, teachers,
lawyers, etc,.
The
fourth type of jobs is the ‘cream’ and these demand ‘originality’ and ‘creativity’
from the side of the worker in order to accomplish these jobs. Although these
jobs might require ‘prior knowledge’ and ‘expertise’ too these are mainly ‘innovative’
in nature. The talent of the worker that comes through birth is more important
here and this will not come out of mere studying or practicing. The element of ‘art’
is more in these types of jobs. ‘Inventions’ and ‘discoveries’ are the result
of these types of jobs. These involve creating something new that hitherto was
not there in the world. Consequently, these jobs include: leaders of
organizations, scientists, authors, painters, etc. For example; the bulb,
computers, internet, train, airplane, gravitation theory, relativity theory, Monalisa
painting, etc., are the products of the fourth type of jobs. Scientists and
artists come under this class.
The people doing these fourth type of jobs
are rare and only due to them the ‘humanity’ is seeing new things and is
surging ahead. These are the pathfinders – leading their field of study and the
world as well towards new horizons and new heights.
